Efficiency of Window’s: Then and Now

Windows have changed drastically over time and we’ll be discussing what that change is and how we now have increased immensely in quality and style over time.

Windows are an integral part of this world, from the most extravagant buildings to the most humble home. But have you ever wondered how this came to be? How windows originated and grew? To answer these questions, we need to journey back to 100 B.C. to Roman Egypt and Alexandria. Windows began as small openings for the purpose of letting light and sometimes heat out (The history of the window and its impact on home design.). But, it wasn’t until 1700 B.C. that we see the possibility of glass beginning to be used (Window).

In the 16th and 17th century is when glass windows became very popular. These are the windows you think of when we speak of the renaissance and the old gothic buildings in Europe. They were all over from churches to the homes of the rich ((Glass) windows in buildings). A very popular form of window was the sliding sash window or double hung windows. These were used consistently into the 18th and 19th century (Window). Glass windows also showed who was wealthy at the time. Enough so that the British government placed a “Glass tax” on those they believed to have money to spare (When did glass windows become common?).

Glass windows began very fragile and a bit distorted leaving much room for growth in the window world. The first method that was tried was crown glass, made from a small pipe, then cylinder glass was tried helping it improve (A History of Window Glass). After the pipe blown glass, flat plate glass became more prominent in the middle of the 19th century (FLAT GLASS MANUFACTURING BEFORE FLOAT). Over time, windows become stronger, clearer, and more common in homes. They also started using different technology, like double glazed windows, to improve the durability (Double glazed window). Today, the most common type of window is called float glass which is used regularly when making windows (The World of the Flat-glass Industry).
