5 Signs Your Windows Are Too Old

When assessing your windows, sometimes you will find that your windows are too old to work properly and we’ll be discussing the major signs of old windows so you can determine whether or not your windows need replacing.

Over time, your windows can lose the strength they once had leaving you with things like high energy bills, drafts, and low quality performance. These can be hard, but what’s often more hard is determining whether or not your windows are too old and need replacing. That’s why it’s important to be familiar with the major signs of old windows so you can replace them before you’re stuck with cold drafts and loss of energy (Window World).

1. Wind and Leaking Air

One major way that you can tell whether or not your windows are too old is if they leak air. If your windows cause drafts, your home can not be properly insulated making your home more cold or hot than it should be (Guide to Air Sealing). Gaps and leaks in your windows also can cause your energy bill to rise immensely (Slash Your Utility Bill with a DIY Energy Audit). So be wary of the danger of drafty windows within your home.

2. Condensation

If your windows have regular condensation, that could mean that your door needs replacing. Condensation is not only frustrating to deal with, but can also cause mold (How to Get Rid of Condensation Inside Windows: Seasonal Guide). Mold can become a terrible problem and can cause structural damage and major health concerns. So be particularly aware of condensation when assessing the condition of your windows.

3. Increasing Energy Bill

Another great way to identify whether or not your window is too old is if your energy bill is increasing and you’re not sure why. According to the CEE, “Windows are responsible for 25-30% of residential heating and cooling energy use. Air leaks through gaps and heat travels easily through inefficient and old windows.” (Weatherization for Homeowners). With this in mind, a rise in your energy bill can signify that your windows are old and not working properly.

4. Challenging to Open, Close, and Lock

An additional way to judge whether or not your windows are old is if they don’t open, close, or lock properly. This is a common occurrence for most older windows since many of the mechanisms can break over years of pressure (Window Woes: A Guide to Fixing Windows That Won’t Stay Up). This can also be caused by warped frames and worn hardware, making them difficult to repair and often requiring replacements (How Long Do Windows Last?). So being aware of how well your windows open, close, and lock can tell you if they are too old.

5. Apparent Damage, Rot, and Cracks

In addition to the other four major signs of an old window, noticeable damage, rot, and cracks can easily tell you if your window is old and needs repair or replacing. Such damage should cause you to seriously consider replacing your window (How To Install Vinyl Windows). According to HGTV, such damage needs to be replaced (Repair It or Replace It). According to Bob Villa relating to rot, “Because the wood is not exposed to air or sunlight, it remains damp—providing optimal conditions for fungi growth. Older wooden windows are at an even greater risk, as water tends to pool on the horizontal sills, seeping through cracks in the paint.” (Homeowners, Beware: This Hidden Problem Could Cause Your House to Crumble). Therefore you need to be cautious of rot, cracks, and damage so you can replace them before serious damage occurs.
